Who Is An International Student?

At Mercer University, an “international student” is defined as a student who is not a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. permanent resident – including citizens of other countries graduating from a secondary school (high school) in the U.S.

Maintaining Immigration Status

All F-1 and J-1 visa-holding students are responsible for maintaining their individual status as full-time students within the United States.

Traveling as an International Student

As a student studying in the United States, you may be able to travel during your time of study. If you travel internationally, for annual vacation or during a school break, make sure you take the appropriate steps before you travel to ensure a smooth reentry into the United States.

Working As An International Student

F-1 students may not work off-campus during the first academic year but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions. After the first academic year, F-1 students may engage in three types of off-campus employment.
