Linnaeus University is a center for innovative thought in one of the most progressive countries in the world. With two campuses located in Kalmar and Växjö, Sweden, LNU has plenty of exciting opportunities, including over 150 degrees and 2,500 single subject courses. Linnaeus University has a strong network for exchange, and hosts over 900 full time international students annually from all over the world. These students all come to experience the one-of-a-kind Swedish education model, which focuses on self-guided learning and Socratic dialogue; Linnaeus has combined this humanities driven approach with strong focuses in computer science, business, the natural and social sciences, and healthcare, to create a totally unique environment for its students.

At Swedish universities, students usually study only one or two courses intensively at a time, followed by an exam for each course (consecutive scheduling), instead of studying several different courses simultaneously, with a midterm and a final exam for each course at the end of the semester (parallel scheduling). The duration and extent of programs and courses are expressed through the credit system used. One semester
(20 weeks) of full-time studies corresponds to 30 credits or 30 ECTS/approximately 15 US semester credits. Freestanding courses and modules are generally 7.5 credits each and usually run for five weeks. Full-time studies requires 40 hours of studies (including class time and own studies) per week.

Programs and courses:
All international students are required to be full-time students (enrolled in at least 30 credits per semester) during their stay at Linnaeus University, in order to get residence permit. Choose between applying for one full-semester 30-credit course or combine several freestanding courses. A full-semester course consists of one semester (20 weeks) of full-time studies, divided into several modules. If you choose a full-semester course, you are required to follow the course and the modules exactly as listed in the course outline. Individual modules from different full-semester courses or programs cannot be combined. Programs and courses are offered at both undergraduate and graduate level.

1 Course = 6 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)
6 ECTS = 3 Mercer credits
Minimum Mercer Credits per semester: 12 undergraduate, 9 graduates

All bilateral exchange students are offered accommodation by one of our housing partners during the first two semesters of their stay. These accommodations are in student dorm rooms with your own bathroom and a shared kitchen. The prices range between 4,200 – 4,900 SEK per month. Depending on your contract, you will pay the rent either monthly or monthly in advance with a deposition.

Insure your dorm room and your belongings

You should purchase insurance prior to arriving in Sweden, covering your dorm room and its content against theft and damage.

Internet connection

Please contact the housing company for information on whether your student accommodation has an Internet connection or for advice on how to buy it. There is also the possibility of using the university computer labs or your own laptop on campus.

Payment

When you sign the lease for your room, you will also receive the rent invoice. The invoice must be paid as soon as possible.

Vacating your accommodation and inspection

When you move out, your dorm room should be clean. All rooms are inspected and you will be charged for any extra cleaning or any repairs required.

Where is my accommodation located?

The majority of exchange students are housed centrally in Kalmar. The university will easily be reached by foot, bike or bus.

In Växjö, dorm rooms are located around the city while other student accommodations are situated close to the campus. The university will easily be reached by foot, bike or bus.

Internet access

Computers with internet access can be found both in the library or at your school. Internet access is available in most dorm rooms for a monthly fee of SEK 130. This fee is added to your rent invoice and has to be paid whether you use the internet service or not. Wireless internet is not provided, meaning you need a cable to access the internet. This can be bought at any electronic store in Sweden or brought with you from home. To activate your internet account, contact the internet provider once you have moved into your dorm room.
