Embark on an immersive academic journey through Southern Italy with CSC 285 – Finding Fibonacci in Italy. This 1-credit, faculty-led study abroad course explores the fascinating intersections of mathematics, art, architecture, and modern technology. Students will trace the legacy of Leonardo Fibonacci while visiting historically and culturally rich sites such as Palermo, Monreale, Segesta, Erice, Pompeii, Naples, and Capri. Guided by experiential learning, participants will investigate how ancient principles of design manifest in cathedrals, markets, and ruins—and how modern digital tools like 3D scanning and virtual reality aid in their preservation. Through guided tours, cultural exploration, and reflective academic work, this program cultivates a deeper understanding of the role of mathematics in shaping civilizations and preserving their stories.
