POL 392 – SpcTop in International & Comparative Issues: Korean Studies

3 Credit Hours

Course Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of Korea’s political landscape, focusing on its historical development, contemporary dynamics, and its role on the global stage. Through a comparative lens, we will examine both North and South Korea, analyzing their divergent political systems, ideologies, and the inter-Korean relations amidst changing international alliances. Moreover, students will be able to develop a research project based on not only the course material but also the faculty-led study abroad trip to South Korea during the spring break.

Through this course, students will be able to:

Understand the historical contexts of both North and South Korea’s political systems.
Critically analyze the political developments in Korea and their implications for regional and global politics.
Evaluate the strategies of major international players on the Korean peninsula.
Engage in informed discussions about the future of inter-Korean relations and the challenges of reunification.
Apply theoretical concepts from political science to real-world scenarios in Korean politics.
