Spring Break in Cuba

During this one-week program, students will:

• meet with representatives from the Cuban Ministry of Public Health
• visit to ‘Museo de la Farmacia Habanera’
• visit to a Maternity home
• go on a guided tour of Old Havana
• attend the Fire of the Cannon at the Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana
• visit Escuela LationAmericana de Medicine
• visit a Polyclinic and local family doctor and nurse’s office
• meet with representatives from the Cuban Nurses’ Association
• visit CENESEX
• visit to a local Home for the Elderly
• visit to the Association Yoruba de Cuba and meet with a babalao

IGS 390: Spring Break in Cuba

1 credit hour

Course Description

This one-credit course uses experiential and classroom-based learning to study Cuba’s unique state-run healthcare system and urban planning/architecture in Havana. While open to students across the university, this program fulfills the international experiential requirement for International and Global Studies (IGS) students. The course includes two components: 1) a one-credit 50 minute/week classroom-based course that will introduce students to Cuban culture, politics, and economics; the healthcare system, and principles of urban planning with a focus on Havana; 2) a week-long guided tour of healthcare facilities and urban spaces.
