During this one-week program, students will experience:

• visit the Hague and International Court of Justice
• visit the Escher Museum
• tour the Museum of Ethnography
• visit the Van Gogh Musuem
• visit the Anne Frank Museum
• participate in “Counseling in the Netherlands” Interactive counseling program performed by Stichting Counseling Nederland
• tour Paris including Notre Dame, Left Bank, and Eiffel Tower
• visit the Louvre

COUN 611 – Narrative Theory

3 credit hours

Course Description

This course represents an introduction to the basic tenets of the Narrative Theory
movement, including the theoretical underpinnings of Narrative Therapy.

Course Objectives

1. Familiarization with the historical and theoretical lineage of the Narrative
   movement.
2. An understanding of the delineation between Modem and Postmodern thought.
3. The ability to define and distinguish Narrative modes of thought.
4. Attainment of a basic understanding of Narrative Therapy techniques including Externalization, Identification of Unique Outcomes, and Letter Writing as a therapeutic intervention.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, a student should be able to

1. Describe broadly the historical and conceptual foundations of the tum toward narrative within contemporary social sciences;
2. Discuss how contemporary counseling employs narrative concepts and research approaches as tools by which to understand human conduct;
3. Discuss contemporary understandings of the self and ways in which persona!identity is negotiated and constructed as a narrative project; and,
4. Apply the narrative perspective as an analytic approach in appreciating at least one major area of interest within counseling allied social sciences.

If you are enrolled as a counseling graduate on the Atlanta campus, the 3 credits for this program will cost around $2,340 in tuition for the Spring 2026 semester.
