Join Dr. Stephen Lippi and Dr. Gillian Barkell for an immersive 9-day faculty-led study abroad experience in Tokyo. This 3-credit course explores brain health, cognitive aging, and Alzheimer’s disease through the unique lens of Japanese culture — one of the world’s most rapidly aging societies. Students will visit cutting-edge facilities like the Future Care Lab (SOMPO Care) and the Miraikan Museum’s “Park of Aging” exhibit, dine at the renowned “Café of Mistaken Orders” staffed by individuals living with dementia, participate in traditional Zen meditation and tea ceremonies, and engage with elderly care professionals through hands-on dementia care visits. From the walkable streets of Asakusa to the senior-friendly Sugamo Jizo-dori shopping district, every experience is designed to connect classroom learning to real-world, cross-cultural perspectives on aging, memory, and well-being.
