Experience the trip of a lifetime with Mercer University’s Health Interventions in Marrakech study abroad program! This immersive, faculty-led course takes you beyond the classroom to the vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco, where you’ll work directly with clinics, NGOs, and government agencies tackling pressing public health issues. From empowering adolescent girls with Project Soar to engaging with HIV prevention efforts at ALCS, you’ll gain hands-on experience designing health education materials, conducting community needs assessments, and learning how interventions succeed in diverse cultural settings. Along the way, you’ll explore Morocco’s rich history and traditions through guided cultural visits and reflections that deepen your understanding of global health. Perfect for students eager to grow their skills, broaden their worldview, and make a meaningful impact abroad, this program blends academic rigor with unforgettable real-world learning.

During this one-week program, students will:

Participate in on-site learning at local clinics and NGOs — meet with health professionals at Cabinet de Médecin Généraliste to gain an overview of health challenges in Marrakech.
Conduct community health needs and assets assessments — interview staff, observe programs, and help produce health education materials for partner organizations.
Engage with multiple NGOs — work with Project Soar (empowering adolescent girls), CARE International Maroc, and the Association de Lutte Contre le Sida (ALCS), the largest HIV-focused NGO in the MENA region.
Meet with public health officials — attend a session at the Ministry of Health in Marrakech to learn about key interventions addressing local health issues.
Develop and analyze a community-based health intervention — pair with another student to research and write a report on a health organization in Marrakech.
Explore Morocco’s rich culture — visit cultural and historical sites such as the Medina, Jemaa el-Fnaa, Alnour cooperative, Amal Center, Maison de la Photographie, and other landmarks.

IGS 395 – Health Interventions in Marrakech

1 credit hour

Course Description

Well-designed and well-executed public health interventions are central in redressing health problems. However, many communities continue to suffer unintended consequences from poorly designed and implemented health interventions. This course seeks to equip students with the relevant skills necessary for responding to public health challenges in international settings. Students will be introduced to public health frameworks, principles, and strategies for developing, implementing, and evaluating international public health interventions. Students will learn about how health is conceptualized and promoted in diverse cultural groups. Students will be exposed to various health interventions targeting diverse populations and demographics in Marrakech.

*Tuition is dependent upon your current enrollment and your colleges tuition fees for the semester of your program. If you are enrolled as a traditional undergrad on the Macon campus, the 1 credit for this program will go towards your overall 12-18 credits for the semester and will not create an increase in tuition cost as long as your overall amount of credits (including this 3 credit course) does not go over 18 credits.
